Sun Lakes-Dry Falls, Steamboat Rock, And Grand Coulee
Ice Age Floods geology, desert lakes, Dry Falls, Banks Lake, Steamboat Rock, and Grand Coulee Dam.
Quick Read
- Rough drive: 3.5-4.5h.
- Best for: Ice Age Floods geology, desert lakes, camping, boating, swimming, stargazing, Grand Coulee Dam add-on.
- Best season: Apr-Jun and Sep-Oct; summer is hot but lake-oriented.
- Best base: Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park, Steamboat Rock State Park, Coulee City / Electric City.
- Two-day verdict: strong for a geology/lake weekend, especially when west-side weather is bad.
Why It Fits
This is the clearest "not coastal / not alpine" park weekend within range. Sun Lakes-Dry Falls has deep gorges, lakes, hiking, boating, golf, a visitor center, and Ice Age Floods interpretation. Steamboat Rock adds Banks Lake shoreline, camping, boating, a basalt-rock hike, and Grand Coulee Dam proximity.
Good Two-Day Shape
Day 1: drive to Dry Falls Visitor Center / overlook, settle into Sun Lakes or Steamboat Rock, swim/paddle if in season.
Day 2: Steamboat Rock hike or Banks Lake boating, Grand Coulee Dam visitor center / evening laser show if schedule fits, then return or stay a second night.
Main Stops
- Dry Falls Visitor Center / overlook: core geology stop.
- Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park: Park Lake / Deep Lake / trails / camping.
- Steamboat Rock State Park: Banks Lake, hike to the top, Northrup Canyon, cabins/camping.
- Grand Coulee Dam: interpretive center / tour / laser show seasonally.
Watchouts
- Wind can be heavy at Sun Lakes; plan tents and water activities accordingly.
- Summer heat is a serious comfort issue.
- Sun Lakes summer camping is reservation-sensitive.
- Boating rules and moorage seasons vary by park/lake.
