Oregon state park / high desert ยท Central Oregon

Smith Rock And Bend

Edge-of-range high-desert cliffs, canyon hiking, climbing, and a Bend or Redmond overnight.

Quick Read

  • Rough drive: 5.5-6.25h to Smith Rock / Bend depending on route, traffic, and stops.
  • Best for: high-desert cliffs, climbing, canyon hikes, Bend food/lodging, shoulder-season sun.
  • Best season: Mar-May and Sep-Oct; summer heat can be punishing.
  • Best base: Bend or Redmond / Terrebonne.
  • Two-day verdict: edge-of-range but worthwhile if you want a desert/climbing landscape not available in Washington's west-side parks.

Why It Fits

Smith Rock is a distinctive Oregon state park with deep river canyon views, thousands of climbs, bolted routes, hiking, and mountain biking. Bend makes the long drive tolerable by adding lodging, food, river/town activities, and additional high-desert stops.

Good Two-Day Shape

Day 1: drive to Redmond/Bend, late-afternoon Smith Rock viewpoint / River Trail if not too hot.

Day 2: early Smith Rock hike or guided climbing session, lunch, then return. If doing two nights, add Tumalo Falls / Bend river / Newberry-style volcanic add-ons.

Main Stops

  • Smith Rock State Park: Misery Ridge / River Trail / viewpoints, climbing.
  • Bend: lodging, food, river, breweries, bike options.
  • Redmond / Terrebonne: closer overnight if Smith Rock is the priority.

Watchouts

  • The day-use area is dawn to dusk; no nighttime use.
  • Bivouac camping is tent-only, first-come, and no RV/sleeping-in-vehicle option.
  • Campfires are prohibited year-round due to the dry high-desert climate.
  • Seasonal climbing closures protect nesting raptors; check posted closures.
  • Summer heat can hit hard. Start early and carry more water than a west-side hike would require.
