Palouse Falls And Walla Walla

Dramatic waterfall and scablands stop paired with a better Walla Walla or Tri-Cities overnight.

Quick Read

  • Rough drive: 4.5-5.5h depending on whether the overnight base is Walla Walla, Tri-Cities, or nearer the falls.
  • Best for: dramatic waterfall/scablands stop plus a civilized Walla Walla overnight.
  • Best season: Mar-Jun for flow and cooler weather; Sep-Oct for Walla Walla plus dry landscape.
  • Best base: Walla Walla for food/lodging; Tri-Cities if optimizing drive geometry.
  • Two-day verdict: good if paired with Walla Walla or broader scablands; weak if Palouse Falls is the only target.

Why It Fits

Palouse Falls is visually strong but small as a standalone state park stop. The better weekend is to treat it as the headline viewpoint in a broader eastern Washington trip: scablands, Walla Walla, wine/food, and maybe other basalt/canyon stops.

Good Two-Day Shape

Day 1: drive to Palouse Falls, use designated viewpoints only, then continue to Walla Walla or Tri-Cities for lodging.

Day 2: Walla Walla food/wineries/downtown or another scablands/geology stop, then return.

Main Stops

  • Palouse Falls State Park Heritage Site: official state waterfall viewpoint.
  • Lyons Ferry / Snake River area: route-dependent add-on.
  • Walla Walla: better overnight base than trying to camp at/near the falls.
  • Optional: combine with Sun Lakes / Dry Falls only if doing a longer loop, not a clean two-day sprint.

Watchouts

  • Palouse Falls is day-use only.
  • All trails into the canyon and to the base of the falls are permanently closed; venturing beyond designated viewing areas and trails is prohibited.
  • Parking is extremely limited and weekend/holiday waits can be long.
  • Trailers and RVs are not allowed.
  • Extreme weather is possible; bring water and check conditions.
