Orcas Island And Moran State Park

Island weekend with Mount Constitution, Cascade Lake, Mountain Lake, kayaking, camping, and Eastsound.

Quick Read

  • Rough drive/ferry: 4.5-6h depending on ferry timing and terminal wait.
  • Best for: island camping/lodging, lakes, kayaks/SUPs, Mount Constitution views, a slower two-night pace.
  • Best season: May-Oct; winter is quieter but ferry/weather risk rises.
  • Best base: Eastsound, Rosario side, or Moran campground if camping.
  • Two-day verdict: excellent if ferry logistics are handled; too fragile for a last-minute car weekend.

Why It Fits

Moran is one of Washington's best state park weekend anchors. The park has lakes, forested campgrounds, trails for hiking/biking/horseback riding, Cascade Lake rentals, and Mount Constitution views across the San Juans and North Cascades.

Good Two-Day Shape

Day 1: ferry to Orcas, stop in Eastsound, set up lodging/camp, swim/paddle at Cascade Lake if weather fits.

Day 2: drive or hike to Mount Constitution, do a lake loop or waterfall/forest trail, then ferry home.

For a more relaxed version, make this two nights. Orcas rewards slow timing more than itinerary density.

Main Stops

  • Mount Constitution: observation tower and the core view payoff.
  • Cascade Lake: swimming, paddling, family-friendly park center.
  • Mountain Lake: quieter lake feel and trail/rental access.
  • Eastsound: food, supplies, and town time.
  • Rosario / Olga side: good add-ons if lodging or route fits.

Watchouts

  • Vehicle ferry reservations are the gating item.
  • Mount Constitution Road is not accessible to large trailers or motorhomes; large vehicle access is restricted above Mountain Lake.
  • Internal combustion engines are prohibited on Mountain Lake.
  • Bicycle rules vary by trail; check park bulletin boards before assuming a route is bike-legal.
