Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument
Geology-first weekend with blast-zone landscape, Coldwater, Hummocks, and south-side lava terrain.
Quick Read
- Rough drive: 3-4h depending on which side of the monument is usable.
- Best for: geology, blast-zone landscape, visitor centers, Coldwater Lake / Hummocks, Ape Cave / south-side lava terrain.
- Best season: late spring-fall, with snow/road caveats.
- Best base: Castle Rock / Kelso-Longview for west side; Cougar / Woodland for south side.
- Current 2026 status: Johnston Ridge Observatory vehicle access remains disrupted by the SR 504 slide/bridge work. Plan around current closures.
Why It Fits
Mount St. Helens is one of the most distinctive geology weekends inside the radius. It is less straightforward than Rainier because the best-known west-side endpoint, Johnston Ridge, has been cut off by the 2023 South Coldwater slide and ongoing SR 504 bridge replacement work.
Good Two-Day Shape
Day 1: west-side visitor center sequence, Coldwater Science and Learning Center if open, Coldwater Lake / Hummocks Trail if accessible.
Day 2: south-side Ape Cave / Trail of Two Forests / Lava Canyon style itinerary if roads and permits allow, then drive home.
If Johnston Ridge officially reopens, rebuild the trip around Johnston Ridge plus Hummocks / Coldwater.
Main Stops
- Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake: gateway stop.
- Science and Learning Center at Coldwater: west-side substitute while Johnston Ridge is disrupted.
- Coldwater Lake / Hummocks: visible eruption landscape without needing crater-rim ambitions.
- Ape Cave: lava-tube side of the mountain, a different trip feel.
- Climbing route: permit-dependent and not the default family weekend.
Watchouts
- The monument is fragmented by road access. West, south, and east approaches are not casually interchangeable in one day.
- Johnston Ridge access is a live construction/closure issue; verify WSDOT and USFS before routing there.
- Ape Cave needs its own access/permit/current-status check.
- Weather, snow, and smoke can all degrade the trip.
