Mount Rainier National Park
Closest iconic national park weekend, with Paradise, Sunrise, waterfalls, old growth, and subalpine meadows.
Quick Read
- Rough drive: 2.25-3.25h depending on entrance and construction.
- Best for: iconic mountain views, subalpine meadows, old growth, waterfalls, family-accessible walks, and snow-country feel.
- Best season: Jul-Sep for Sunrise and higher trails; winter/spring mostly means Paradise and lower-elevation areas.
- Best base: Ashford / Paradise side for first visit; Packwood or Enumclaw/Crystal for east/northeast sectors.
- Current 2026 status: NPS says timed entry reservations are not required anywhere in Mount Rainier in 2026.
Why It Fits
Rainier is close enough to do as a day trip, but a couple of days lets you avoid the worst timing tradeoffs: arrive early, see Paradise or Sunrise with less rushing, and split waterfalls/old-growth walks from meadow/viewpoint time.
Good Two-Day Shapes
First Rainier Weekend: Paradise / Longmire
Day 1: Nisqually entrance, Longmire stop, Paradise meadows / visitor center, Myrtle Falls or Skyline fragments depending on snow.
Day 2: Narada Falls, Reflection Lakes / Stevens Canyon if open, or a lowland forest walk before driving home.
Higher View Weekend: Sunrise / White River
Day 1: Enumclaw / White River side, Sunrise if open, short ridge or meadow walks.
Day 2: Tipsoo / Chinook Pass / Grove of the Patriarchs or Ohanapecosh-area old growth if roads are open.
Main Stops
- Paradise: most famous meadow and mountain-view area, open year-round but snowbound much of the year.
- Sunrise: highest vehicle-accessible area in the park, with strong views and trailheads when open.
- Ohanapecosh: old growth and river/waterfall feel, often a calmer contrast to Paradise.
- Longmire: historic buildings and lower-elevation walks.
Watchouts
- No timed entry does not mean no congestion. Entrances and parking can fill or crawl on summer weekends.
- NPS road status is more reliable than GPS; GPS can send you toward a closed entrance or gate.
- Snow lingers high. A June trip can still behave like spring in the subalpine zone.
- Carbon River and Mowich access has separate closure/bridge complications; confirm before treating it as an option.
