National forest / scenic byway ยท North Cascades
Mount Baker And Artist Point
Huge road-end alpine payoff with Heather Meadows, Artist Ridge, Chain Lakes, and Ptarmigan Ridge options.
Quick Read
- Rough drive: 3-3.75h to Glacier / Heather Meadows / Artist Point.
- Best for: huge alpine views without backpacking, short family walks, wildflowers, fall color, and serious day hikes from the same road end.
- Best season: usually Jul-Oct for vehicle access to Artist Point; winter is non-motorized snow access.
- Best base: Glacier / Maple Falls / Bellingham; add one night in Bellingham if food/lodging comfort matters.
- Two-day verdict: excellent when Artist Point road is open; weaker before the road opens unless snow travel is the point.
Why It Fits
Artist Point is one of the highest-reward scenic endpoints inside a weekend radius. The Forest Service describes it as the road end of the Mount Baker Scenic Byway and the summer trailhead for Chain Lakes, Ptarmigan Ridge, Table Mountain, and Artist Ridge.
Good Two-Day Shape
Day 1: drive to Bellingham or Glacier, stop at Nooksack Falls or Heather Meadows if open, short walk around Picture Lake / Artist Ridge.
Day 2: choose the energy level: easy Artist Ridge views, moderate Chain Lakes section, or a bigger Ptarmigan Ridge / Table Mountain plan. Drive home after dinner in Bellingham or Glacier.
Main Stops
- Artist Point: primary scenic viewpoint and trailhead.
- Heather Meadows / Picture Lake: easier walking and reflection views.
- Artist Ridge: short high-payoff walk with accessible vistas near the start.
- Chain Lakes / Ptarmigan Ridge / Table Mountain: stronger hikes from the same area, snow and wilderness restrictions dependent.
Watchouts
- The road to Artist Point is not plowed in winter, has no set open/close date, and is typically open by early July until first significant fall snow.
- Parking fills quickly on sunny weekends.
- Potable water is not available at Artist Point.
- No overnight camping at Artist Point from May 15 to Nov 15, including sleeping in cars.
- Winter access needs avalanche judgment and gear; the route is not controlled.
