Columbia River Gorge And Hood River

Waterfalls, basalt cliffs, river towns, wind sports, orchards, wineries, and shoulder-season sun.

Quick Read

  • Rough drive: 3.5-4.75h to Hood River / central Gorge.
  • Best for: waterfalls, cliffs, river towns, wind sports, scenic drives, wineries/orchards, shoulder-season sun.
  • Best season: Apr-Jun for waterfall/green, Sep-Oct for fruit/fall, summer if heat/wind are acceptable.
  • Best base: Hood River; Stevenson / Cascade Locks if staying Washington side.
  • Two-day verdict: one of the best non-national-park weekends in the radius.

Why It Fits

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is an 80-mile river canyon and the only sea-level route through the Cascade Range. The west-to-east moisture shift gives the trip unusual variety: lush waterfall corridor, dry grassland edges, river towns, and views toward Hood / Adams.

Good Two-Day Shape

Day 1: drive to Stevenson / Cascade Locks / Hood River, choose a waterfall corridor hike or viewpoint sequence, then Hood River dinner.

Day 2: Rowena / Mosier / The Dalles or Washington-side viewpoints, fruit loop / wineries if relevant, then return.

Main Stops

  • Multnomah / waterfall corridor: iconic, crowded, permit/parking-dependent depending on season.
  • Cascade Locks / Bridge of the Gods: river crossing and food stop.
  • Hood River waterfront: wind sports, town base, family-friendly riverfront.
  • Rowena Crest / Tom McCall area: better in spring wildflowers and clear weather.
  • Washington side: Beacon Rock / Stevenson / Catherine Creek style add-ons.

Watchouts

  • Fire/smoke and summer heat can make the east Gorge unpleasant.
  • Waterfall-corridor parking and permits can be the limiting factor.
  • Wind is part of the appeal and can also ruin paddling/swimming assumptions.
  • Poison oak and ticks are more relevant than in west-side forest trips.
